I'm surprised no one's brought this up yet:

As if we needed more proof ALW has gone off his rocker...although frankly I don't think he's been quite right since "Sunset Boulevard." (Okay, "Woman In White" has some good stuff as well, but still...)

I'm really glad that worked. Those would have been terrible last words. |

Oh. My. God. I'm going to be sick.
Oh well, might as well go for it. What does he say? (can't download this at work, so could someone post his 'comments'?.....snort) Of course, it just boggles the mind when you consider that sequels are not often good. Which means, considering how bad this film was in the first place.......Hey, maybe Joel won't be chosen. That cheers me up. |

I was going to bring it up, but I was waiting for something on LiveJournal to become official. Someone on the community "phanwank" is starting a letter writing campaign, similar to the movie campaign, way back when. Now granted we all know how that worked, but it helps to feel like SOMETHING is being done...even though we also know that ALW is Satan Incarnate and quite possibly cannot read.
Go to the LJ website www.livejournal.com/phanwank for details. Also, there's the notmyphantom community (run by our moderator and board owner Crysania) and the churchoferik community. And here's this: Andrew Lloyd Webber c/o The Really Useful Group 22 Tower Street London WC2H 9TW Spread the word and start saying something. And if anything, if it does open we can not go and see if we can get it to close as quickly as, say, the broadway run of Lady in White. Or his goofy soccer musical. Or anything he's written since Phantom, for that matter. |

For anyone who wants to read what Wee Andy has to say, but not actually hear the toad speak. Here's the transcript I typed up:
Hi. I'm just back from my writing and composing holiday. And I have a little bit of an update. I am now 99.9% certain I am going to do the sequel to the Phantom of the Opera. It's taken me 10 years to decide to do this. I want to base it on the ideas I had with Freddy Forsyth I had years ago, something called The Phantom of Manhattan that actually did come out as a book. There were various things in the plotting I was not very happy with and I think I've solved them. Freddy himself is away at the moment but when I find him, when he gets back, I hope we can sort them out. But I'm really buzzed up about it. I can report that the Master and Maguerita, I have a few doubts about, whether in fact it can be done as a musical. I think it could be done as a play with music and I think that's a very different thing. But I think there are complications with it because many many of the lines read very well and they are actually less likely to sing as well as they sound in dialogue. And therefore I have one or two reservations about it, but I'm not going to give it up at the moment. I'm kind of resigned at the moment and tired of the fight. If Wee Andy wants to destroy Phantom yet AGAIN, I just don't care anymore. He's shown time and time again how he doesn't care about the Phans. He's a washed up old talentless hack at this point in his life. ~Crysania |

It's official (unless we bury him in a letter-writing campaign):

Oh Lord!
I really should finish reading Phantom of Manhattan to see if it's really as bad as I've heard. But even the little that I've read of it doesn't strike me as strong enough material for a quasi-official sequel. I'd rank it on the same level with most of what I read on ffn.net. It just goes to show you, guys having midlife crises should not: A, try to write new shows, or B, rehash their old hits, until they've settled into their new identity. But I also think the whole knighthood thing went way to his head. |

I'm just happy this happens now and not a few years back. They have already spoiled the musical with the film, they might as well go ahead and turn Forsyths brilliant well-written novel, so true to both Erik and Leroux ("Hey guys! I didn't die! I moved to the Big Apple instead. And oh! I really like Starbucks!") into a musical. The Phantom of Bronx, maybe, turn it up a bit...
Sorry, I'm just a bit agitated at the moment. Better seal myself up with the OLC and Stockholm recording and forget anything Phantomy post 1990. Is there the slightest chance that this will not be done? |

But really, how do you think the plot is gonna be carried out? I don't remembur much of Forsyth's novel, but hasn't ALW somewhat painted himself into a corner by adding the epilouge to the 2004 picture? his film will now have to be seen in the light of the sequel, which must take place between the moment when GErry disappears, and when aged Raoul sees the rose at the cemetery.

So this is going to be a play? you mean he's not all keen on making a new movie with Emmy and Gerry reprising their roles?
Who makes a musical sequel? Maybe i've not seen enough, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. And if there were some they certainly weren't hits. |

Musical "sequels," while certainly rarer than film ones, are not unheard of: Grease. Bye Bye Birdie, Annie, and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown have all had follow-up projects.
Now, as to GOOD musical sequels, well, they're a little harder to find... ~LCD ****
I'm really glad that worked. Those would have been terrible last words. |

Maybe it'll take no one going to go see it and the lack of interest once it comes out to knock some sense into him.

So I'm guessing you all heard about how one of ALW's cats struck a blow for justice by deleting all of its master's work on Phantom 2 a few weeks ago?

The amusing thing is how wee Andy's PR rep scrambled to "assure" everyone that ohhhh no, it wasn't all deleted, we were just joking, really, we were! The cat really didn't delete everything....
Makes me go wtf? Methinks they doth protest too much? www.broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=19275 And yeah, Otto is a Turkish Van. |

Re: Poor Otto | ||

So I don't know if any of you got updates between Otto's deleting the Phantom 2 score and now, but:
1) Otto was hit by a car and tragically died (the cynical side of me says somebody in the pro-sequel camp put a hit out on the little guy), and 2) ALW just completed recording the score and is now on the hunt for a lyricist. And yes, it's still based on "Phantom of Manhattan." R. "Pain is my power."

I hated the book "Phantom of Manhattan". If ALW wants this to have a chance in hell, he should find another story to base this off of.
