I've never seen this version before but I hear it comes highly recommended by phans and I just wanted to get your thoughts before I went ahead and purchased it Thanks.

I think it's also the only Phantom film adaptation to actually be filmed at the Palais Garnier, so it gets high marks for that, too. Posts: 128 (01/17/08 06:08:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Don't worry thankfully I've checked that my DVD player supports both Region 1 and Region 2 dvds so there shouldn't be a problem there ... hopefully! I have heard that Dance's Erik is considered relatively tame by the standards of other adaptations particularly Leroux and having watched a couple of clips on YouTube it would seem this view is fairly accurate. Although I generally lean towards darker Phantoms rather than the more fluffy ones, it's still nice to see a fresh take on the character, particularly in this dark time when ALW is about to destroy the integrity of the musical with some God-forsaken sequel and hey it's Charles Dance

Posts: 317 (01/17/08 07:59:27) Opera Star Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	For me, the Kopit Phantom is kind of like the Disney version of Hunchback of Notre Dame--it takes enormous liberties with the source material, but tells the revised story well enough that it works on its own terms. It is worth seeing, for the performances of Dance and Burt Lancaster and the lovely location shooting at the Palais Garnier. ~LCD **** I'm really glad that worked. Those would have been terrible last words.

He's great in the role and while yes, he's tame, it's one of my favourite movie versions. I'd definitely get it!

He's beautiful. And oh, yes, for the "is that apt?" line. It's worth it for that too, if only to be able to understand the joke. God, I'm an old phan! I'm going to have to do something special for my 20th. Oh wait..20 will be 2010, you know, the 100th anniversary of the original novel's publication. Yeah, we so ALL need to do something for that. Pilgrimage to the opera house anyone?

His voice just makes you melt.....sighs And I love that Christine is a blonde, like how she was written in the original novel. It does have some flaws, like how Erik first meets Christine and no Masquerade/Red Death scene, but other wise it's still an enjoyable version.

The then cast of the paris opera is featured and the voice doubles for Teri Polo and Charles Dance are fabulous! It's also really pretty as a movie. You'd think you'd hate it more because of it's liberties, but really they are fairly tame... and I like how it really explores how Christine can love two men at the same time in different ways. It's one of my favorites.

Charles Dance is stunning. The story is nothing like the Gaston version, for this Phantom is one of the most "human" phantoms out of any version you can find. He is stable, for the most part, so do not go in expecting some crazy lustful guy that we've gotten used to. But overall, its very good.
